More clashes between South Sudan forces and rebels loyal to former vice President Riek Machar have continued despite a ceasefire agreement signed early this month.

VO 1 Uganda says it will only withdraw its troops from South Sudan once the International Governmental Authority on Development deploys the proposed protection force.
VO 2 Uganda’s chief of defense forces Katumba Wamala says civilians and UN bases are being protected by the Ugandan military and pulling out would put them at risk.

“And once there is a force which will do what the UPDF is doing, then we have no reason to stay, if we get that force that will come in and replace us, thats what we want, we didn’t go in as a tour, it was not a visit, we went in because of the situation that was unfolding and which is likely to unfold, we have seen images from Bentui, where bodies are being scooped by a grader, i don’t think thats the kind of situation that people would want to promote in South Sudan.”
VO 3 Katumba has denied allegations that the Ugandan military took part in recent clashes and challenged rebel leader Riek Machar to provide evidence that his forces were involved.

“We are not involved in any combat zone, the most forward position of our troops is in Bor and we are there just to secure the Bor town in the process to provide security for Juba which is the capital, so we are not involved in any combat.”
VO 4 Uganda deployed troops to South Sudan last December to fight along side the army of South Sudan's president Salva Kiir.
VO 5 A ceasefire agreement was signed by Kiir and Machar on May 9, but each side accused the other of violating it soon after is was set to be implemented.
