Seven Ukrainian troops have been killed in an ambush in the country's eastern region of Donetsk.
According to reports, the soldiers were attacked by armed insurgents resulting in a deadly fire-fight.
The incident comes a day after Donetsk asked Russia to absorb the region following Sunday's referendum to break from Ukraine.
The vote was branded illegal and illegitimate by Kiev and the west.
