The San Francisco annual pride parade is one of the biggest and most spectacular celebrations of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender identity anywhere in the world.
The theme of this year's festival was "Color the World with Pride" -- a message of inclusivity one of the event's "Grand Marshals", or honorary representatives, has been trying to champion.
South African-born attorney and human rights activist Melanie Nathan campaigned to bring around 20 LGBT Africans to march with her in the parade.
But not one of the applicants was granted a visa by the U.S. State Department.

An estimated million people turned out to take part…
There was music…dancing…and extravagant costumes.
But among the revelers…few African faces.
The theme "Color Our World With Pride" was an opportunity for advocates to call for the GLOBAL decriminalization of homosexuality.
They argue sexual identity, and the freedom to express it, is a basic human right.
South African-born activist Melanie Nathan, one of the faces of Pride 2014, has been fighting to defend LGBT people in countries such as Uganda, Cameroon and the Gambia.

Africa is criminalizing homosexuality through old Draconian penal codes and through anti-homosexuality legislation. For that reason, we want to bring African voices to the United States of America to tell their stories of the resulting persecution.
Nathan invited 21 LGBT Africans to San Francisco to march with her contingent in the parade.
She raised money on a crowd-funding website for plane tickets and accommodation…
But the U.S. State Department turned down every visa application…unconvinced the applicants would return to countries that might persecute them.
This Spring, Canada and Sweden denied visas to LGBT Ugandans seeking to attend gay rights-related events.
Nathan says she hoped the U.S. might respond differently - especially since Washington recently imposed sanctions on Kampala for its anti-homosexuality stance.
She's disappointed…but undeterred.

To the people in Africa, we're here marching for you. You're not criminals, you're beautiful people just like us here in San Francisco today.
Among Nathan's contingent was a gay man from Zambia. Chalwe says he's now finally able to be himself…and wishes others could enjoy the same freedom.

Rolf Harris found guilty of assaulting young girls after 7 week trial
Australian childrens entertainer Rolf Harris has been found guilty of indecently assaulting four young girls in charges that date back to the 1960s.
The 84 year old showed no emotion as the jury at a court in London returned guilty verdicts on all 12 charges related to attacks between 1968 and 1986.
Some of his victims had travelled from Australia and New Zealand to take part in the seven week trial. From London, Catherine Drew reports.

On Monday he was found guilty of indecently assaulting 4 young girls....aged between 7 and 19. One of the alleged victims was a childhood friend of his daughter, Bindi who claims Harris abused her from the age of 13, including one assault that took place when Bindi was asleep in the same room. Harris had insisted the pair had a 10-year consensual affair that started after the girl turned 18.
Another victim Tonya Lee, who has waived her right to anonymity, said she was abused while on a tour of the UK with an Australian youth theatre group in 1986 when she was 15. She has spoken to Australia's Channel 9 programme... a current affaire.

Prosecutors portrayed Harris as a "Jekyll and Hyde" character, who had a dark side to his personality. While the charges relate to 4 victims, .....the court heard from six other women from various countries including australia, new zealand and malta who allege they were assaulted by rolf Harris but whose allegations could not be considerd by the court as they did not occur in the UK. One woman, a make up artist, said Rolf Harris was known as the octopus..... The jury were able to take these allegations into consideration.
The man who led the police investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Michael Orchard said Harris had considered himself above the law.

EU summit wrap: Ukraine, Russia and Juncker
EU leaders have given pro-Russia forces in Ukraine a Monday deadline to retreat from East Ukranian checkpoints, and return hostages from the OSCE.
The ultimatum was handed down just as political and trade deals were signed between the European Union and former soviet republics Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.

In the presence of all 28 leaders of the European Union gathered around a table, Three former soviet republics, the Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova signed association agreements with the EU in a ceremony Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko described as historic.

The deals provide a roadmap for countries aspiring to eventually join the EU by agreeing to political and economic reforms. A separate deal will also see the lifting of trade barriers.
But for Ukraine, this was a symbolic victory. Former president Victor Yanukovich u-turned on the same deal last year in favor of forging closer ties with Russia, sparking pro-EU revolutions in the capital Kiev that led to his overthrow. The subsequent pro-Russian rebel movements that led to Russia's annexation of the crimean peninsula have fueled European tension over Moscow's military presence and support from across the border.
EU leaders have now given Russia a 72 hour deadline to urge the rebels to return border checkpoints, handover hostages and stick to a peace plan with Ukraine.

The EU is echoing warnings from the United States that Russia could face economic sanctions. But Amanda Paul - Foreign Policy Expert - European Policy Center: says reaching a consensus to get tough will prove difficult for Europe.

Friday's summit also sought to end tension within the group of EU leaders over the nomination of Jean Claude Jucnker as the European Commission's next President.
The UK together with Hungary were outvoted 26 to 2 - in supporting the former luxembourgish prime minister to hold Europe's highest position. Britain's Prime Minister David feels Mr. Juncker is an old fashioned federalist, and will hurt Britain's chances of staying in Europe if there's a referendum.

EU leaders also began mapping their visions for the next few years… the UK and France agree Europe should be able to move at different speeds. But with economic recovery still fragile and a banking union in the works many suspect the quest for deeper European integration will continue to cause rifts. Especially with new Eastern members looking to join.

It’s easy enough to be a fan of the German national team if you live in Berlin. But what if you’re one of the 20,000 or Americans who call the city home? Just finding a friendly place to watch the game can be a challenge. But Americans have found one place where they can at least root for their team in peace.

US coach Klinsmann to face native Germany
The United States and Germany are facing off in a critical game that could decide whether the US team advances to the next stage of the tournament. The match features additional drama because American coach Jürgen Klinsmann is one of the most celebrated footballers in German history and coached the German team from 2004 to 2006. How are Germans reacting to seeing their former hero now on the other sideline? Ira Spitzer reports from Berlin

London scientists make breakthrough in fight against malaria
Scientists at Imperial College London are celebrating a breakthrough in a new approach to tackling malaria after 8 years of research. For the first time ever, researchers have managed to genetically engineer mosquitoes so that when they breed, there is a strong bias to producing males in their off-spring. In test cases, the mosquito population died out after 5 or 6 generations because of the lack of females. It is the female that carries the malaria parasite and while this research is in the early stages, it's been widely welcomed. From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Researchers in laboratories at Imperial college london use a special suction device to suck up mosquitoes and examine them. They're the flies that people usually
swat away. But these mosquitoes might be the most precious in the world and they are looked after day and night.
They are no ordinary flies…… They have been genetically modified to produce male off-spring.
Dr Nikolai Windbichler is the joint lead researcher on the project.

So the idea is that if you release this mosquito strain that carries this gene induces the elimination of the x chromosome into the population level, at the population level, the sex ratio will be shifted more and more towards males so there would be more and more males in the population and fewer and fewer females, but because females are important for the population, at some point, the population disappears.

This breakthrough is the culmination of 8 years of work. It took scientists here six years to overcome the problem of infertility in the genetically modified mosquitoes.
And that's why this population of mosquitos is so precious. Professor Andreas Crisanti oversaw the research at imperial college…and explains how this technique offers a unique opportunity to fight malaria.

"The short term benefit is that you increase the number of males towards the females and the males do not transmit malaria so you reduce the number of mosquitos that transmit the disease and then you eventually reach a point where you have a population crash because there are not enough females to sustain reproduction at this point, you block transmission of malaria, at this point if you treat all the cases, you don't have malaria anymore. Even if the mosquito reappeared. "

Malaria kills hundreds of thousands of people each year, mostly young children. 90 per cent of those deaths are in sub Saharan Africa and the disease is estimated to cost African economies billions of dollars.
This preventable and easily treated disease remains a killer in many parts of africa due to a lack of in fracture, funds and sometimes education.
The London scientists are working with communities in Kenya, Uganda and Burkina Faso to prepare for testing what happens when these mosquitoes are released in the wild. They hope field tests could be carried out in the next 2 or 3 years….depending on how their research is received by the authorities and residents at these sites. Professor Andreas Crisanti says while some may fear this high tech tampering with nature….. this approach will not harm existing eco-systems.

Of about 3 thousand mosquito species only a handful transmit malaria and our technology is attuned to attack only 4 or 5 species so all the other species will remain untouched….so this is much milder than what will happen for example when spraying a rice field or for spraying insecticide.

CAMERON UNDER PRESSURE OVER HACKING TRIAL
British Prime Minister David Cameron is under pressure in the UK over his decision to employ a communications director who has now been convicted over conspiring to hack phones.
The jury in the phone-hacking trial failed to reach a verdict on a separate charge against Andy Coulson of misconduct in a public office.
Mr Coulson, a former News of the World editor, later became communications director for David Cameron and worked for him at Downing Street.
The hacking scandal which led to the trial also caused the closure of the News of the World in 2011, and led to the lengthy Leveson Inquiry into press ethics in the UK.

HACKING AUTHOR INTERVIEW
Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks has been cleared of all charges at the UK’s phone-hacking trial.
Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson, however, has been found guilty of conspiring to hack phones.
Both were on trial in a phone-hacking trial that sprang from a scandal which led to the closure of Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World.
But Ms Brooks has been cleared of conspiracy to hack voicemails, two counts of conspiracy to pay public officials and two counts of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
Andy Coulson is also a former director of communications for Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron.
Our London correspondent Olly Barratt has been speaking to Journalist Peter Jukes, who has been in court for every single day of the trial, and has written a book, The Inside Story of the Phone Hacking Trial.
Outside the Old Bailey, Olly began by asking him about the scale of the legal proceedings.

NASA chief confident of Mars goal
NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden has expressed confidence that the US space agency will succeed in putting humans on Mars.
He was speaking after viewing the Orion spacecraft being assembled in Florida. Its aim is to carry astronauts into deep space.
But a Congressional report from the National Research Council this month blasted NASA for lacking a viable strategy for meeting that goal.

The Orion spacecraft is being assembled here in a clean room.
The US space agency says this is the module that will - if all goes well - eventually carry astronauts to an astroid and even on to Mars.

NASA’s administrator Charlie Bolden was at the Kennedy Space Center this week to see the spacecraft.
Orion is scheduled to blast-off on an unmanned test mission in December.
INSERT: “While Orion hardware has been tested extensively on the ground, putting the spacecraft through its paces in space provides data you just can’t get here on Earth. Right now, NASA’s building on knowledge gained through the International Space Station and more than fifty years of human spaceflight experience. Solving difficult challenges that will enable humans to safely explore deep space. What you see here today is a critical part of that strategic work.”
But solving those challenges is not going well - at least according to a report out this month.
The National Research Council - in an investigation ordered by Congress - predicts NASA’s current strategy will fail to put humans on Mars - a lofty goal outlined by President Obama.
The report calls into question the safety and sustainability of the project, and says NASA risks losing “the longstanding international perception that human spaceflight is something the United States does best.”
But NASA is at pains to portray the US as still being the leader in space. Mark Geyer is the Orion program manager.
INSERT: “This spacecraft of course is the first human exploration spacecraft developed in now over thirty years. It’s a big deal and it’s the product of a very dedicated workforce that believes that keeping America first in space exploration is critical”
For those workers here at the Kennedy Space Center, the short term mission is substantially more practical.
INSERT: “We’re going to be finishing up this vehicle here in the next month.”
Cleon Lacefield is from Lockheed Martin and part of the team working on Orion.
INSERT: “…we will be through with all of the functional tests. And we will then fuel it, and then stack it onto the Delta IV heavy vehicle.”
Orion is also the focus of the Kennedy Space Center where the loss of the space shuttle program three years ago hit hard.
INSERT: “We’re turning the corner now. It’s a transition period which are [sic] never easy.”
Rex Walheim is a NASA astronaut who flew on three missions.
INSERT: “It’s been three years since we launched on the last space shuttle mission, and we’re turning the corner with both commercial crew to the Space Station and with the Orion program. So it’s going to help a lot. And seeing this thing lift off and flying to space - it’s going to be an amazing, amazing milestone.”
Orion’s test launch will be in December when it’ll travel 3,600 miles into space and then return to Earth at 20,000 miles per hour for splashdown landing off the coast of California.

Nuclear talks with Iran wrap up in Vienna
Talks in Vienna on Iran's nuclear program between Iranian officials and six world powers has now wrapped.
Officials say they've begun drafting a rough accord but big issues are yet to be reconciled like the number of uranium enriching centrifuges Iran has to give up and how rapidly western nations will want to lift economic sanctions.
And with 5 weeks to go before a final deadline to reach a deal, there is skepticism that either side will compromise on their positions.

With a deadline looming to reach an international agreement on Iran's nuclear program talks between Iranian officials, the US, UK, Germany France, China and Russia saw some progress… negotiators have so far agreed on a framework for a final draft to ensure Tehran cannot build a nuclear weapon.
But Iranian officials on Friday said huge blanks remain, and the text contains more questions than answers. Key issues like reducing Iran's stockpile of 19,000 centrifuges which Washington wants to reduce to the low thousands. An effort to ensure Iran is unable to quickly enrich it's uranium capacity long after a deal is done. But Tehran is not prepared to drastically reduce it's nuclear capabilities and wants to see countries lift sanctions quickly. With a deadline looming to reach an international agreement on Iran's nuclear program talks between Iranian officials, the US, UK, Germany France, China and Russia saw some progress… negotiators have so far agreed on a framework for a final draft to ensure Tehran cannot build a nuclear weapon.
But Iranian officials on Friday said huge blanks remain, and the text contains more questions than answers. Key issues like reducing Iran's stockpile of 19,000 centrifuges which Washington wants to reduce to the low thousands. An effort to ensure Iran is unable to quickly enrich it's uranium capacity long after a deal is done. But Tehran is not prepared to drastically reduce it's nuclear capabilities and wants to see countries lift sanctions quickly. June 20: Iraq crisis opens door to Kurdish independence
The ongoing crisis in Iraq has opened the door to independence for the Kurds.
The Kurds are a minority in the north and eastern part of Iraq and since the end of the regime of Saddam Hussein, they've gained a lot of autonomy.
The Obama administration has acknowledged that the Kurds feel left out of Iraq's political process, but as our Washington correspondent Priscilla Huff reports, observers feel that the Kurds may achieve their dream of independence sooner rather than later.

As ISIS - the militants calling themselves the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria - swept across Iraq, taking control of major cities such as Mosul
the pesh merga - the Kurd's militia - took control of Kirkuk - a city claimed by the Kurds but not officially part of their autonomous region.
Qubad Talabani, Deputy PM of Kurdistan, saying he believes the militants are not interested in the Kurdish regions ... but the violence required them to protect their people.

As he remains in this limbo, the question is what next for Assange? His argument to the US Attorney General Eric Holder is that he should stand by his word that no reporter will be jailed under his watch…

Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John Boehner entered the meeting wanting to know what the White House plans to do.

After the meeting, the leaders left the White House grounds saying nothing...
and the Obama administration issued a paper statement, saying that after options were reviewed consultations would continue.
With Iraq's President Nouri Al-Maliki urging his fellow Shia' to take up arms against the Sunni militants of Isis, the white house continues to push back, urging political unity.

Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John Boehner entered the meeting wanting to know what the White House plans to do.

The United States has not said how it will respond to a formal request by the Iraqi government for air strikes against militant positions.

UK TO RE-OPEN IRAN EMBASSY AMID IRAQ CRISIS
The UK says it plans to re-open its embassy in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
Ties have thawed recently following attacks on the British embassy in Iran in 2011 which led to the suspension of full diplomatic relations.
And Britain's moves to improve its relationship with Iran come as the West engages with Tehran on the crisis unfolding in Iraq as ISIS / ISIL militants advance.

But he says creating an environment where talks with Iran on Iraq and other matters can take place - is important.

Stage set for US to discuss Iraq with Iran at nuclear talks
The stage is set for talks between the US and Iran over the threat extremists now pose to the future of neighboring Iraq.
Early stage discussions between the two countries could take place on Wednesday in Vienna, on the sidelines of nuclear talks.
US Secretary of State John Kerry, in a fresh indication of American concern about the Iraqi crisis, says airstrikes are also possible in a bid to halt atrocities allegedly perpetrated by ISIS militants.

In a sure sign of the urgency with which the US views the situation in Iraq, John Kerry publicly voiced what was once unthinkable.
He told Yahoo News interviewer Katie Couric that, yes, the US will be willing to talk about Iraq with Iran….despite the enmity that has existed between Washington and Tehran since the revolution swept the mullahs to power.

Those talks…albeit larded with caveats…could begin later this week in Vienna.
The US and Iran have delegations there discussing the country's nuclear aspirations.
For months, the Obama administration has insisted it would ONLY discuss nuclear matters with Iran…nothing else on the bilateral agenda was going to be allowed to cloud the talks.
The Secretary of State's comments certainly appear to have taken the Pentagon by surprise.
There, Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters the Defence Department has no intention of working with Tehran.

But at the White House, a spokesman said working with the Iranians in Iraq may prove to make sense.
And the former British Ambassador to the UN, Sir Jeremy Greenstock, agrees.

For now, the news from Iraq only gets grimmer for the Obama administration, and threatens to derail the President's foreign policy legacy of being the man who ended the war there.

Russia cuts off gas supply to Ukraine
Ukraine says Russia has now cut off its supply of natural gas supplies following a breakdown in negotiations.
Talks brokered by the European Union failed to bring the two sides to an agreement and with a 3rd of the EU's gas being supplied by Russia, there's concerns this decision could have a serious effect on gas trade in Europe.

Europe sees around 15 per cent of it's supply of natural gas come over Ukrainian ground and it's why the EU has been keen to be the one mediating the talks between Russia and Ukraine.The Russian gas company Gazprom says it will only supply Kiev with gas which has been paid for upfront - Europe is concerned about the ramifications on it's own supply. But the European Commission says it's sure the danger of a serious shortage is a long way off yet due to how much gas Ukraine has stored. Sabine Berger is the EU's Energy Spokesperson.

"What we can say if that in order to have a safe supply in winter for the EU, Ukrainian storages should be filled and the storage should amount to around 18-20 billion cubic meters at the end of summer. This is why we think it's important also to find a solution and to enable the filling of the storages."

The dispute centers around debt repayment and the price Ukraine pays for gas with went up by 80 percent after the fall of the former government. The two agreed on a winter price of 385 USD per 1000 cubic meters but Russia refused to allow a summer price drop to around 300 dollar which was also part of the EU proposal. As fas as European concerns go, energy experts like Dr Arno Behrens is an energy expert at the Centre for European Policy Studies says it's not in Russian interests to prolong the dispute.

"I think that they will get back together around the table. You have to see that the market in terms of volume of Ukraine is one of the biggest destination markets of Gazprom - equal to the size of Germany - about 30 billion cubic meters per year. So there's clearly also an interest for Gazprom to supply this market. And of course what's maybe more important is to be perceived and to continue to be perceived as a reliable supplier which is also in the interest of Gazprom in terms of its downstream diversification. You've seen the deals being struck with China - there are possibilities with other countries in the East and therefore Gazprom is not interested in a long term disruption of relations."

The situation in Eastern Ukraine isn't perceived to be improving making diplomatic tensions harder to resolve but the EU says it's still 'not pessimistic' about the prospect of getting Russia and Ukraine back around negotiating table and preventing the two sides taking the issue to the arbitration court in Stockholm.

“Uganda should not withdraw just because of the request from Riek Machar, you know in what we signed earlier with Riek, that was on the cessation of hostilities in January, we agreed that the Ugandan forces will withdraw from the theater of operations, that means they will not be active on the front and indeed since that day they have not been active on the front and they are far in the rear
VO 2 Riek Machar and his rebels indicated as one of demands that Ugandan troops must pull out of South Sudan as precondition for the the on-going peace talks to yield results.
VO 3 Ugandan troops went into South Sudan in December 2013 and had been fighting along-side President Salva Kiir’s army after former vice president Riek Machar took up arms against the government.
VO 4 Vice President James Wani Iga says South Sudan is an autonomous government and no one should dictate on its foreign policy.

And it was not stipulated that they must withdraw from the country of South Sudan. And by the way, Ugandan forces were in the country 3 years ago combating the LRA, so we are a sovereign country and we are free to bring any force.”
VO 5 South Sudan says its committed to a peaceful resolution of the conflict and blames Riek Machar’s rebels for not respecting the truce.
The conflict in South Sudan has so far displaced thousands and many have lost lives.
VO 6 Vice President James Wani Iga and a team of religious leaders are in Uganda for consultations with South Sudanese nationals for suggestions for the forth coming National reconciliation dialogue next month.

John Kerry closes Sexual Violence Summit in London
INTRO: The US Secretary of State John Kerry has given a keynote speech to delegates from Africa and around the world - at the final day of a UK summit to end sexual violence in war zones...
Mr Kerry pledged a further 2.5 million dollars of funding to programmes aimed at helping children in conflict.
The week long event in London has resulted in 155 countries signing up to a declaration to better document and prevent sexual attacks in conflict.

Young lives are being ruined by sexual violence in Syria, South Sudan, in the Central African Republic as we gather here...as we speak."
VO 2: Throughout the summit government representatives have met with charity workers, doctors, lawyers - all of whom work on the ground in conflict zones to stop sexual violence being used as a weapon.
Sadia Abdi from Action Aid told me it's all about responsibility...
CUT 2: Sadia Abdi from Action Aid: "I want to see that the states should be accountable for the commitment to bring justice to the perpetrators. To make sure women are part and parcel of their programmes."
VO 3: An international protocol was launched earlier this week - a comprehensive checklist which essentially outlines just what governments must do to eradicate the problem.
Zambia, Uganda, Nigeria, Chad and the DRC are among the countries which have signed up.

Obama pledges action on Iraq, claims "all options" open
President Obama says that all options are on the table for the United States in Iraq, after he conceded that Islamic militants now pose an enormous threat to the country's stability.
The President is coming under pressure from his Republican opponents,
They accuse him of being asleep at the switch, as the militant forces gained control of Mosul and Tikrit creating a massive humanitarian crisis in the north of the country.

Even White House loyalists agree the President and his national security team were caught completely flat-footed by events in Iraq.
Military strategists here are stunned by the speed with which the Islamist militants managed to seize control of Mosul and Tikrit….and along with it, an enormous amount of American military hardware that the US had bequeathed to the country's armed forces before they were either overcome or simply run away.
For the US, that defeat is a humiliation….for months, the Obama administration publicly claimed that Iraq was ready to be protected by Iraqis.
Yesterday, flanked by the Australian Prime Minister, President Obama could only admit that assessment was wrong.

That claim…that all options are on the table…is overstated.
No one in Washington seriously thinks that this President would ever send ground troops back to Iraq.
His legacy, after all, rests on being the man who ends wars, not starts them.
But drone strikes on militant positions in Iraq are now a real possibility.
Administration officials held confidential briefings for members of Congress on Capitol Hil.
There Republicans, like House Speaker John Boehner, were engaged in the ritual excoriation of the President.

The White House says it wants to provide more assistance to the government of Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki - and yesterday President Obama almost pleaded with the Iraqi leader to head off further Islamist gains by reaching some kind of accommodation with the country's moderate opposition.
But that kind of a deal has proved very elusive, which is why the White House now finds itself staring a crisis in Iraq directly in the face…and one that some analysts here says is of the Obama team's own making.

African countries meet at Boko Haram Summit in London
Government representatives from Nigeria have joined US and UK officials in London for a summit on how to tackle the Islamist militant group Boko Haram...
The meeting came alongside the ongoing international summit to end sexual violence in conflict zones.
Boko Haram remains in the spotlight after militants from the group kidnapped more than 200 girls in Nigeria back in April.

They're gathering in the delegates lounge - it's a chance for them to meet their counterparts and discuss policies informally. However, the real action has been taking place behind closed doors at a sideline summit on tackling Boko Haram.
Officials from Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria joined those from the UN, and the UK to discuss the threat of the Islamist militants.
The Under Secretary for Human Rights Sarah Sewall represented the US.
Topics on the table included improving regional co-ordination and looking at further options to combat terrorism.
The British Foreign Secretary William Hague chaired the meeting - and said real progress had been made...
CUT 1: British Foreign Secretary, William Hague: "Nigeria and Chad, Benin, Niger and Cameroon have today confirmed that they will put into operation a regional intelligence fusion unit - bringing together their intelligence efforts - to find and pull together all available information and to tighten the net around Boko Haram. The UK along with the United States and France will provide the necessary technical expertise for that."
VO 3: Downstairs in the main summit arena, those charities with people working in Nigeria were keen to stress that the country's government has to be held responsible for finding the girls kidnapped by the group....

Pakistan may not be sending a team to the World Cup, but it WILL have a key player on the field in Brazil.
Pakistan is MANUFACTURING many of the soccer balls, or FOOTBALLS as they are known in most of the world.
The footballs -- this year called BRAZUCA -- come from the north-east region of Sialkot (see-al-cote).

Special Gala Screening of Zulu to mark it's 50th anniversary

This week in London, British and Zulu royalty joined forces at a Gala screening of the 1964 classic film, Zulu. The film has been digitally remastered and re-released to mark it's 50th anniversary.
The gala screening, attended by Britain's Prince Harry and Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi of South Africa, raised money for British and South African charities. It was also a chance to reflect on why the film has remained so popular. From London, Catherine Drew reports.

The opening scenes of zulu are memorable…. victorious zulu warriors, walk through the corpses of british soldiers following the battle of Isandlwana … a zulu warrior picks up a rifle and holds it aloft.
TAKE SOUNDUP:
This sets the scene for the retelling of the battle of rorke's drift in 1879, when around 150 British soldiers, held off 4 thousand of so zulu warriors during a 12 hour battle for the british army outpost.

SCRIPT:
The film stars Stanley Baker and Michael Caine in his first major film role. Caine wasn't able to attend the Gala but sent a greeting.
INSERT:
"Zulu was probably the most important film of my career because it gave me a chance to play a proper character. Up until that time, I'd been playing little bit parts in movies. "
SCRIPT:
The zulu warriors were played by real zulu tribesmen and women…. Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who is now 86, had a small part in the film…. playing his grandfather, zulu king Cetshwayo.
INSERT:
"I had never dreamt that I would, you know, participate in any film, let alone in a film that the giants of the film industry were participating Stanley Baker, and people like Michael Caine who was debut it was."

SCRIPT:
The film, which was directed by Cy Endfield, who had been blacklisted by Hollywood for his alleged communist views…… has remained popular ever since its 1964 release and is likely to find a new generation of fans with the digital remastering of it. The digital remastering gives the film, which is already known for it's stunning scenery, a beautifully crisp picture and sound.
Suzannah Oliver, Cy Endfield's daughter, says he father would have been delighted with the result.
INSERT:
I think he would have been absolutely thrilled and the thing about my dad is that he was an artist, he painted with the camera and when you see those amazing shots of zulus coming over the hills, also he had a musical scence, the ricocheting of the rifles and the beating of the drums, that was very musical the whole thing and it's just going to be bigger and better, isn't it, it's just going to be great.
SCRIPT:
While the film has notable historical inaccuracies and takes a very colonial-era view of the battle and language that would not be used today.….Prince Buthelezi says the film has served an important role in educating people about Zulu history.
INSERT:
"It highlighted a very very important part of our history because I think the tendency today is to think of our liberty struggle it only started when, you know, when our political movements were launched."
SCRIPT:
And that is a sentiment that would have pleased director Cy Endfield, according to his daughter, Suzannah Oliver

"He brought dignity to both sides, it wasn't a question of the white man against the black man, it was dignity on all sides and I think that was his message. "

This week in London, British and Zulu royalty joined forces at a Gala screening of the 1964 classic film, Zulu. The film has been digitally remastered and re-released to mark it's 50th anniversary.
The gala screening, attended by Britain's Prince Harry and Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi of South Africa, raised money for British and South African charities. It was also a chance to reflect on why the film has remained so popular. From London, Catherine Drew reports.

Russia and Ukraine fail to agree on gas deal
Lead in
Russia and Ukraine have so far failed to agree over natural gas pricing and delivery through Ukraine and on to Europe after more talks.
But Russia has also extended the deadline for payment, and so a possible gas cut off, to Monday.
Tom Barton reports from Moscow.
