The South Sudan government has brushed-off demands by rebel leader Riek Machar that Ugandan forces withdraw from the world’s youngest Nation.
Vice President James Wani Iga is in Kampala for consultations with South Sudanese nationals for suggestions for the forth coming National reconciliation dialogue next month.

VO 1 Vice President James Wani Iga says South Sudan is a sovereign state and Riek has no right to issue demands to it.

“Uganda should not withdraw just because of the request from Riek Machar, you know in what we signed earlier with Riek, that was on the cessation of hostilities in January, we agreed that the Ugandan forces will withdraw from the theater of operations, that means they will not be active on the front and indeed since that day they have not been active on the front and they are far in the rear
VO 2 Riek Machar and his rebels indicated as one of demands that Ugandan troops must pull out of South Sudan as precondition for the the on-going peace talks to yield results.
VO 3 Ugandan troops went into South Sudan in December 2013 and had been fighting along-side President Salva Kiir’s army after former vice president Riek Machar took up arms against the government.
VO 4 Vice President James Wani Iga says South Sudan is an autonomous government and no one should dictate on its foreign policy.

And it was not stipulated that they must withdraw from the country of South Sudan. And by the way, Ugandan forces were in the country 3 years ago combating the LRA, so we are a sovereign country and we are free to bring any force.”
VO 5 South Sudan says its committed to a peaceful resolution of the conflict and blames Riek Machar’s rebels for not respecting the truce.
The conflict in South Sudan has so far displaced thousands and many have lost lives.
