SYRIA VOTES IN 'SHAM ELECTION'

Government-held areas of Syria are voting in a presidential election criticised by the West.

The poll goes ahead despite an ongoing civil war which has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

President Bashar al Assad is expected to win a third seven year term in office.

Former British ambassador to Syria Henry Hogger says the election is a sham.
