Pro-Moscow separatists are calling on Russia to absorb the eastern region of Donetsk after claiming victory in a referendum on self-rule for Eastern Ukraine.
The Obama administration and European Union had already said they would NOT recognise the vote, dismissing it as illegal.
Moscow greeted the results with calls for "dialogue" and peaceful "implementation" of the referendum results.
Some of the organizers in the region say nearly 90 percent voted in favor.
