Turkey Committed to Fighting Terrorism

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned countries with troops in Somalia that pulling out would be a "big mistake"...


Uganda and Kenya recently said they are considering withdrawing troops from the African Union Mission in the country...

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan was is in Uganda for a state visit, urging for global cooperation in bringing peace to Somalia. 

VO 2 Mr. Erdogan says his government is committed to providing support to victims of terrorism….and it would be be wrong to abandon the Somalie people now.

"I would not find it the right move if the UN has started restraining the budget that is allocated to the AMISOM in Somalia. I think leaving alone such a country fighting terrorism at such an extent would be such a big mistake."

VO 3 Turkey is the world's biggest humanitarian contributor to the fight against terrorism.

VO 4 In Somalia, Turkey has built much of the infrastructure including schools, roads, airport…. It's pledged to support Uganda fight terrorism.

VO 5 Uganda recently announced it is reviewing it's mission in Somalia raising fears that it is considering a pull out. 

VO 6 This after the European Union cut a 20% budget funding to the horn of Africa country. Kenya too has threatened to pull out.

VO 7 But Ugandan President Museveni says this funding cut will not affect his resolve to fight terrorism.

"Really my concern in Somalia is not whether the European Union funds this or not, my concern in Somalia is for the Somalie people to develop an ideology so that those who want to help them like Turkey and us, we help them to rebuild their state and their institutions like their armed forces…..this is the bigger issue."

Uganda is the biggest troop contributing country to Somalia with about 6000 of its force serving under the African Union Mission in the country.
VO 9 Uganda was the first African country to send troops to Somalia to fight the al shabaab militia  in 2007.
