President Obama will visit Orlando on Thursday to pay tribute to the 49 people who died in last weekend's shooting massacre at the Pulse nightclub.
The FBI is appealing to members of the public to provide more information about the gunman - Omar Mateen.
His wife is now the subject of a criminal probe to determine whether she knew of her husband's plan to attack the nightclub, and there are reports that she could face charges.
Meanwhile, the candidates vying to succeed President Obama in the White House have been squaring off over gun control, after Donald Trump indicated that he supports moves to stop suspected terrorists from being allowed to purchase weapons.

With Orlando still in the early stages of grief, White House officials say Barack Obama will seek to bring some measure of relief to the families and friends of those killed in Sunday's nightclub massacre.
For President Obama, Orlando is just the latest location he's had to visit to mourn with those whose lives have been overturned by gun violence in America.

And while White House teams were preparing to depart for Florida….there was suddenly an unexpected indication that Donald Trump might be willing to back one call voiced by President Obama for tighter gun control.
The President said this on Tuesday:

On Wednesday morning, Mr Trump - on Twitter - indicated that he agreed.
He promised to try and persuade the National Rifle Association….America's largest, most powerful pro-gun group….to drop its opposition to the so-called "no-fly, no-buy" rules change.
But dreams of comity on gun control policy soon evaporated: in a statement, the NRA said it has no plans to change policies….and in a speech Donald Trump sounded more orthodox Republican themes.
He suggested that if only the revelers in the Pulse nightclub had been armed….some of them might still be alive.

Hillary Clinton, in an online interview, sarcastically offered Donald Trump her own personal "welcome" to the gun control debate.
And in a personal appearance, pushed back against his proposals, which include a ban on immigration as a way of keeping trouble-makers off US soil.

Meanwhile on Capitol Hill….

Democratic Senators from Connecticut, scene of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in
December 2012, engaged in a filibuster……taking over the Senate floor and vowing to keep talking until the legislature does something about gun control.
Among then, Senator Richard Blumenthal.

It is still, however, a measure too far for many Republican lawmakers who remain in hock to the National Rifle Association, and to their own personal interpretation of the constitutionally-guaranteed "right to bear arms".
President Obama, in Orlando, will give further voice to the need for gun control….but he knows it's no more likely to happen this time around than before.
