And traded low blows at the debates.
UPSOT debate
In July - FBI Director James Comey delivered his long awaited verdict on the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's handling of classified information when she was secretary of state.
UPSOT COMEY
It's an issue that has persistently dogged the Democratic nominee's campaign - and provided endless attacks for her opponent.
At their convention in July, the Republican rally cry against Hillary Clinton was led by Donald Trump advisor and Former General Michael Flynn.
UPSOT FLYNN
Republican establishment figures tried for months to stop Donald Trump becoming their nominee. The Republican convention saw a last ditch effort fail - and Mr Trump was triumphant.
UPSOT TRUMP
In Philadelphia, the Democratic convention brought out A-list speakers such as President Barack Obama, Vice-President Biden and former President Bill Clinton.
But the star of the show - and possibly this entire election - was First Lady Michelle Obama.
UPSOT OBAMA
And a moment of history too - Hillary Clinton is the first women to become a nominee for a major US political party.

For any other candidate in any other election - this would be terminal. But this is 2016 and this is Donald Trump.
UPSOT APOLOGY

UPSOT MICHELLE OBAMA
After strong performances in the debates, Hillary Clinton's campaign were measuring the curtains for the oval office.
But then - just 11 days before election day. Breaking news
UPSOT WOLF BLITZER
Christmas came early for Donald Trump. He stayed on message and his campaign had renewed confidence…
UPSOT TRUMP
After more than a year and a half of intense campaigning - the two candidates are as close as ever in the polls.
This brutal, bitter, divisive election is almost over.
