US Election: Candidates claim New York roots

In the race for the White House New York is getting its say.

Polls open in a few hours time [0600 local / 1000 GMT] in one of the
most important state votes.

Donald Trump for the Republicans and Hillary Clinton for the Democrats
are hoping to clinch victory, helping to secure their party's
nomination for the November general election.

Trump's expected a landslide win. But his popularity figures are plummeting.
He's now the most unpopular presidential candidate in recent times
with almost 7 in 10 people disliking the Donald.

Hillary

For the Democrats, former NY Senator Hillary Clinton is facing off
against Brooklyn-born Bernie Sanders.
And local boy Bernie is playing up his New York roots with the voters.

Voxes

He's won 7 of the last 8 state votes and one poll shows him narrowing
the gap here, just 2 points behind Hillary.

Trump, Clinton, Sanders - none of them want to lose on their New York home turf.
Because if they can make it there, they hope they can make it anywhere.
