Trump accuses Cruz of "fraud" in Iowa, demands re-run

In the US Presidential race, just five days before the next primary election is due to take place in New Hampshire, Donald Trump is accusing one of his main rivals of 'fraud'.

And he's calling for the Iowa Caucuses, held earlier this week, to be either nullified or re-run.

Mr. Trump says Senator Ted Cruz, another Republican candidate for the Presidency, "stole" the contest in Iowa.

So is he just a sore loser, or has his claim got substance?

Our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks reports.

Donald Trump is not a man to mince his words….particularly when he's only allowed to express his thoughts in 140 characters.

It was on Twitter that he launched a blistering attack on Ted Cruz - the right-wing Senator from Texas who scored an upset victory in Monday's Iowa Caucuses.

Mr. Trump suggested that victory was no accident….indeed, he accused Senator Cruz of fraud, saying he had deliberately interfered with the Caucus process while it was underway, after he heard this report broadcast on Monday evening by CNN.

Ben Carson is another conservative seeking the Republican Party's Presidential nomination….and after that report was broadcast, Senator Cruz issued public statements saying it was his belief that Mr. Carson was about to quit the race.

Donald Trump argues that some Carson voters heard those statements on their way to the Iowa Caucuses….decided it wasn't worth voting for their man, and instead switched their allegiance to Senator Cruz.

Asked to explain himself, Ted Cruz took to the airwaves and offered an apology.

But that's not enough for Donald Trump who says the Iowa race should be re-run - something that seems highly unlikely.

It's also not enough for Ben Carson who is still in the race for the White House.

What happens next will unfold in New Hampshire where voters go the polls in primary elections on Tuesday….and where Donald Trump maintains a 22 point lead over Senator Cruz.

He's anxious to keep things that way…and is calculating that by accusing the Iowa winner of dirty politics….he'll keep New Hampshire Republicans firmly on his side.
