Seeming to bring the British wet weather with them, the Duke and
Duchess toured the 9/11 memorial clutching umbrellas.
In the pouring rain they paused briefly to lay flowers on the memorial
where the names of the nearly 3,000 victims are listed.

During his first visit to Washington, Prince William also gave a
speech at the World Bank on the illegal trade of wildlife.

And it was that theme that the couple re-iterated when they met former
first lady Hillary Clinton in New York on Monday evening to promote
their charity United for Wildlife.

"These species are being illegally butchered in the name of trinkets
and medicine. It's easy to blame others for the problem, demand in
Southeast Asia, not enough protection on the ground and so on. But if
I may say, we could start with looking closer to home. Our own nations
still have thriving black markets in these products, and we have to
raise the game at home as well as abroad."

The couple's visit has certainly caused a stir in America, especially
on the morning shows.

The US has no royal family of its own. But New York University Culture
Professor Salvatore Fallica thinks this young couple plays well to the
celebrity-conscious American audience.
TAKE SOUNDBITE
"There is an enormous affection for the Royal Family in certain
quarters. And that is because they represent the kind of pure
celebrity in a sense, they're celebrities who don't bring any of the
baggage that most celebrities bring to the tabloids."

While here the British royalty also met basketball royalty, including
LeBron James, known by fans as King James.

But outside the arena, a sixth-straight night of protests. Anger in
the US at perceived police brutality, following two grand jury
decisions not to prosecute white police officers responsible for
killing unarmed black civilians.
The three-day visit has been brief, but busy. A packed itinerary of
influential events. All of which have cemented the couple's celebrity
status in the US, and built on that British-American relationship
which will grow in importance when Prince William becomes King.
