TAKE NATURAL SOUND UP

1 ... 2....3... go!....thud, thud, aww! both missed!

TRACK
Two axes thud against a wooden target, failing to sink into the pine, safely landing on rubber floor mats
This is bad axe throwing
one of two places in the American capital where you can try your hand at throwing an axe at a target.

TAKE SOUND UP
"Pick it up...and see how it feels, Get used to the weight of it, it's a little bit heavy, yah., it's a little bit."

TRACK
Lauren Hutchinson is one of the hosts and trainers
She says, safety comes first - horseplay is definitely not allowed.
The axes weigh a few kilos - a couple of pounds - and there's no age limit.

TAKE BITE
"Anyone can do it, we've have an 8-year-old, a little 8-year-old girl doing it, and she was awesome, y'know we stuck her up on these little cinder blocks we have here so she had a little bit of height, but yah, we've had 8-year-olds and 80-year-olds in here so yah, anyone can do it, for shure."

TRACK
Cheering definitely is allowed.

TAKE SOUND UP - THUD! yah! There you go!

TRACK
America's founding father, George Washington,
famously said
he could not tell a lie
he chopped down the cherry tree with his axe.
Now, Washingtonians are admitting, it takes some practice to throw an axe

TAKE SOUND UP - THUD, oh yes!

TRACK
And once mastered, there are even competitive leagues.
Lauren Hutchinson.

TAKE CLIP
"I think that it's a sport, because it does take a certain physicality to it, stamina and things like that. ANd we do have a league actually. We're part of the World Axe Throwing League so we're going to be starting that up really soon."

TRACK
Bad axe throwing has seven locations open in the U-S with three more in the works
and in the American capital city - they have competition.
You can also try your aim at Kraken axe throwing.
a definite change of pace from the softball, kickball and volleyball leagues many Washingtonians participate in.
