PKG: Spicer out, Scaramucci in after White House communications shakeup

The White House has a new Communuications Director:  Anthony Scaramucci, a career Wall Street financier who has long been personal friends with President Donald Trump.

His appointment yesterday sparked the immediate and angry resignation of Sean Spicer, the White House Press Secretary who has defended President Trump through thick-and-mostly-thin over the last 6 months.

He'd also become something of a character in popular culture.

Can the new man help turn things around for the embattled Trump Presidency?

Our man in Washington, Simon Marks, says he's not so sure.

6 months into the Trump Presidency and suddenly a new sheriff rode into town.

Anthony Scaramucci looks every inch a Donald Trump clone.

If you didn't know he was a successful Wall Street financier, you might think he ran a car dealership in New Jersey.

Slicked-back hair, tight-fitting suit, easy sales patter…..he told reporters not once, but three times, that he "loves" Donald Trump.

Of course, he hasn't always waxed that lyrical about America's 45th President.

Here's the same Anthony Scaramucci making an appearance on Fox News back in the days when he was supporting another Republican for the Presidency, Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin.

That was then, this is now.

And just in case there were any lingering doubts about where Mr. Scaramucci stands, he seems to have a few hours on Friday scrubbing his Twitter account…deleting critical references to the President.

His appointment caused uproar behind the scenes in the West Wing….,many of the President's top aides don't trust him, don't like him, and don't want him there.

They include Sean Spicer, who immediately resigned his post as White House Press Secretary after what was described as a "vehement" conversation with the President.

By lunchtime, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the Deputy Press Secretary, had been promoted and given Sean Spicer's job.

They're peas in a pod:  both of them have shown an historically unprecedented willingness to lie repeatedly on behalf of the President, and undo decades of transparency and public accountability in Washington.

Sean Spicer made it almost performance art in his hapless appearances behind the White House podium.

So much so he was lampooned on the comedy show Saturday Night Live by actress Melissa McCarthy.

So we won't have Sean Spicer to kick around any more.

After months of pandering to Donald Trump, his breaking point has been passed.

The President seems to think Anthony Scaramucci can improve the way in which the White House communicates its message to the wider public.

But unless he's got the authority to silent the President's very loud Twitter account….like Sean Spicer before him it may not be long before he's firmly on the back foot.
