The U.S. Vice Presidential candidates are set to debate (at Longwood University in Farmville Virginia at 9pm on Tuesday / 0300 GMT)
Hillary Clinton's running mate Tim Kaine is a U.S. Senator from Virginia, and Donald Trump's running mate Mike Pence is the Governor of Indiana.

The first debate by Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump was seen in some format by about one in three Americans.
Expectations are lower for this one debate with the vice presidential candidates,
Tim Kaine for the Democrats and Mike Pence for the Republicans.

Tim Kaine is currently one of the two U.S. Senators representing Virginia.
He also was that state's governor.
One of the reasons why he's on the ticket with Hillary Clinton is that Virginia is a swing state - the suburban region near the American capital city are very Democratic while to the south and out to the mountains, voter preferences turn conservative and Republican.

Mike Pence was a broadcaster, before serving in the U.S. Congress in the Republican leadership and then running to be governor of Indiana.
Political experts such as Dr. Sean Foreman of Barry University agree,
the two men are qualified.

In the short term, for this debate,
the two men have to just not make any major mistakes
at a time when they will be asked tough questions
about whether Donald Trump's taxes matter
or the Clinton's marriage history matters.
But in the bigger picture,
Mike Pence and Tim Kaine must reassure American voters that if anything were to happen to the next president
whether it is Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump
that they are prepared and qualified to serve
