News of Prince Harry's engagement has made headlines on the other side of the Atlantic, where America is poised to go "royal-crazy" over the news that Meghan Markle is officially joining the monarchy's inner circle.

It was inevitably headline news here in the United States.
Word of Prince Harry's impending nuptials would always have made the news in a country with no royal family of its own.
But with an American moving in to Nottingham Cottage within the grounds of Kensington Palace….well, the media in a country that divorced itself from Britain in 1776 is going to town.

Americans invariably live vicariously through the British royal family.
But this time things seem qualitatively different.
CBS News, in an internet alert, told subscribers the engagement "signals change inside the famously buttoned up institution that Brits like to call 'the firm'".
That argument is rooted in Meghan Markle's own roots….the daughter of an African American mother, who is a yoga teacher….and a white father, who worked as a TV lighting director….the US media believes she brings a down-to-earth diversity to the Royal institution.
Meghan Makle though is not a household name here…and even on the streets of Los Angeles where her acting career began, some Americans were managing to keep their excitement in check.

Overnight, though, she has become one of the most famous Americans around the world….her relatively quiet acting life in Toronto now firmly at an end.
And many Americans….coached by the media here to retain an interest in the royal wedding….willbe clearing their diaries and getting ready to book flights to bear witness to the arrival of one of them in Britain's royal inner sanctum.
