PKG: Trump confirms he is under criminal investigation

President Trump appears to have confirmed that he is under criminal investigation.

In a furious series of Twitter messages, the President described the investigation into his reasons for firing former FBI Director James Comey as a "phony witch-hunt".

But there are growing indications that Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller is now investigating Donald Trump for obstruction of justice.

Our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks reports.

There is never a bad time to be a lawyer in Washington, but this is a particularly good time.

Just how good?

Even the President's lawyer now has his own lawyer.

Across the upper reaches of the Trump administration officials are scrambling to hire legal representation…Vice President Mike Pence is just the latest to secure a lawyer for himself.

The scramble has been fueled by President Trump's apparent admission that he is now under criminal investigation.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller - who himself has hired a team of 12 lawyers to boost his investigation - is now probing whether President Trump was trying to obstruct justice when he fired the FBI Director.

That's Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein….President Trump's latest target.

He is one of the officials who recommended that the President should fire the FBI Director….but he's now directly overseeing the special prosecutor's investigation into the firing of….the FBI Director.

So, he was asked in Congress…..what happens if President Trump tries to derail that investigation as well.

If left undisturbed, Mr. Mueller's  is likely to go on for months if not years.

President Trump can't abide that notion….and you can see in his every Tweet.

Top White House officials are described by the President's confidantes as being "very angry" over the growing investigation…..but they, along with top Republicans in Congress, are urging President Trump to act with restraint.

Senator Roy Blunt is a Trump loyalist, who presided over the President's inauguration 5 short months ago.

But there is no guarantee the President will heed that advice…..even though

Democrats and Republicans here agree a move to shut down the special prosecutor's investigation would be an act of Presidential political suicide.
