It follows an altercation with a producer but was the latest in a series of controversies.
The move by the BBC not to renew his soon-to-end contract has upset Top Gear fanatics around the world.
But as details of his sustained physical attack on a producer emerge, the BBC felt it had no choice.
And police in Yorkshire - where the incident took place - say they may investigate.
Nonetheless, in Britain some are threatening to protest by not paying their licence fee - the payment which funds the BBC's existence.
The show is one of the BBC's biggest assets worth an estimated $75 million a year, with a worldwide audience of 350 million people.

Favourites to replace him include BBC presenter Chris Evans - not a man with the international profile of Jeremy Clarkson - and apparently not interested.
