There were no plans for a formal meeting between US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin while at APEC – though neither side ruled out the possibility of some informal conversation on the sidelines (UPDATE AS NEEDED).
Relations between Russia and the US are at their worst since the Cold War.
The annexation of Crimea, fighting in eastern Ukraine, sanctions and renewed tensions with NATO have all contributed to a slide into confrontation.
