US Election: Cruz drops out as Trump takes Indiana

Republican Presidential candidate Ted Cruz has dropped out of the race
for the White House, clearing the path for frontrunner Donald Trump.

It follows a big win in the Indiana state primary for the New York businessman.

When Ted Cruz stepped on stage to make his concession speech,
something seemed off.
Perhaps it was the fact he was surrounded by so many his family and friends.
Perhaps it was his wife Heidi looking decidedly weepy.
Or perhaps it was the dramatic, soaring rhetoric that made it very
clear he was working his way up to something much bigger than a simple
"thanks Indiana".
And then came this bombshell.

So Indiana the state Ted Cruz called "favorable terrain", the place
he'd promised to stop Trump in his tracks, became the place for Ted's
final stand.

Where he was run over by the Trump train which is now full steam ahead
to gain the Republican nomination.

The outsider, billionaire businessman, who has never held elected
office, is now virtually assured that nomination.

Mathematically Trump may not yet have all the delegates he needs to
crown him the Republican nominee - but he's not far off.
And with just 9 state votes left, he is the nominee in all but name.

Even the Republican party chairman admitted as much, calling him the
"presumptive nominee" in a tweet after Cruz dropped out.
As such, Trump in his victory speech, which was remarkably subdued,
pushed his message of party unity.

And he had nothing but praised for his rival.

Those words were a startling u-turn from just hours earlier, when
Trump again called him Lyin' Ted and suggested Cruz's father had
connections to the man who killed US President John F Kennedy.

For the Democrats, Bernie Sanders caused upset, edging out Hillary
Clinton in Indiana.
After which it was more fighting talk from the Vermont Senator, who's
promising to battle to the very end.

Yet, the numbers suggest it is now almost certain Trump will face off
against Clinton in the November General Election.
Something no one ever expected going into this turbulent,
unpredictable race for the White House.
