It's mid-term election day in the United States….one third of the seats in the US Senate and the entire House of Representatives are up for grabs.
At stake: control of Capitol Hill, where the Republicans are currently ascendant.
There's been sizable voter turnout since polling stations opened earlier today, and more than thirty million Americans cast their ballots ahead of time thanks to the "early voting" rules in place in many American states.
Our correspondent Simon Marks has the latest from Washington.

This is the day millions of Americans have waited for …. a chance to render their judgement on the Trump Presidency.
Even though the President's name is not on the ballot, these midterm elections will be a critical referendum on his administration.
And as the final hours of the campaign ticked away, he continued trying to energize his supporters…insisting that if crowd size were the arbiter….he was beating Democratic stalwart Barack Obama any day.

But some in the crowd there in Indiana were not Trump supporters.
Here's how he handled some hecklers.

That scorched earth policy is vintage Donald Trump.
As in twenty sixteen, he's thrown the rule book of American politics out of the window.
Not for him the age-old quest to win floating voters in the center.
Rather, the politics of fear based around his utterly false claim that the country is about to be invaded by a caravan of Latin American immigrants.

That ad was banned by the major television networks who deemed it racist….not to mention factually inaccurate.
But at polling stations across the country the President's core supporters are turning out.
In Florida…..

And in Texas….they back him to the hilt.

Democrats are hoping they've done enough to energize their base.
They're taking heart from reports of record turnout and think that indicates their supporters are determined to stop America's polarizing President in his tracks.

But it is far from clear whether they can secure control of both the House of Representatives and the US Senate.
In an unprecedented climate of political division, the supporters of both parties see this as what it is: a referendum on the Trump Presidency…..that will, when the votes are counted, determine the future for the one man who isn't even on the ballot today.
