VO 2: It works by taking healthy mitochondria gene from a donor woman and mixing with the DNA of the two parents…
The healthy gene over-rides the mother's defective mitochondria.
Some criticism the technique on religious grounds, others say more research needs to be done.

CUT 2: John Hemming, Lib Dem MP: "You could say that someone who has learning difficulties you could make a few modifications of the genes could improve that. Where's the line other than modifying genes, once you're modifying genes you're modifying genes."
VO 3: Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer for England insist this isn't genetic modification...
CUT 3: Professor Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer for England: "We're not altering the nucleus; we're not altering those 50 percent of genes that come from each parent. It's .054 percent of the genome and there are only 37 genes to give energy to the cell."
VO 4: MPs voted for this technique by a large majority of 382 to 128 against.
This vote in favor means the first three-person baby could be born as soon as next year.
Despite some having ethical concerns, for many families this news means the end to generations of suffering.
