British physicist Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76.
He became world renowned for his work around black holes and relativity.

They described him as 'a great scientist and an extraordinary man'.
He was born in Oxford in 1942 and became one of the world's best known scientists.

He was given only a few years to live when diagnosed in the 1960s with a rare form of motor neurone disease.
But he insisted he would not be restricted by his physical condition.

Stephen Hawking wrote a number of science books, including A Brief History of Time which sold millions of copied worldwide.
His life was turned into the film The Theory of Everything, in which he was played by Eddie Redmayne.
He spoke at the opening of the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
